The children settled into their seats quickly and ate their dinners on their laps as the train chugged out of the station toward Colorado. Charles stomach hurt, thinking about the next stop. If he did not get chosen in Colorado, he would have to go back to New York and either live in an orphanage, go live on the streets or ride another orphan train.

The other children must have had similar thoughts. They were all quiet until they heard Georgie talking to Lily about St. Nicholas and Christmas.

Charles’ ears perked up and he tried to listen in. He was very irritable from enduring the long day and after a few minutes he turned to Georgie and hissed, “That’s not part of the Christmas story!”
